Democratic Hypocrisy and Out-Group Threat: Explaining Citizen Support for Democratic Erosion

چکیده
With widespread democratic backsliding globally, people’s support for democracy-eroding leaders is receiving overdue attention. But existing studies have difficulty disentangling contextual effects (such as who in power at the time of survey) from individual differences (like which party one supports and how strongly). Moreover, we lack evidence on causal antecedents these attitudes. We propose a novel survey experimental design to strip away political context through hypothetical scenarios, allowing us identify citizens’ differential norms when their own versus out power. Our findings indicate large degree hypocrisy among American public, whose norm-eroding policies increases power, an effect further amplified by two indicators polarization: strong expressive partisanship threat perceived opposing party.

Linkable Democratic Group Signatures
In a variety of group-oriented applications cryptographic primitives like group signatures or ring signatures are valuable methods to achieve anonymity of group members. However, in their classical form, these schemes cannot be deployed for applications that simultaneously require (i) to avoid centralized management authority like group manager and (ii) the signer to be anonymous only against n...
متن کاملExplaining the Democratic Anchorage of Governance Networks
Advances in understanding the democratic anchorage of governance networks require carefully designed and contextually grounded empirical analysis that take into account contextual factors. The article uses a conjectural framework to study the impact of the national democratic milieu on the relationship between network governance and representative institutions in four European countries: the Un...
متن کاملValue-Based Argumentation for Democratic Decision Support
In this paper we discuss the integration of two systems that are based on a specific theory of argumentation: the first, an existing web-based discussion forum; the second, a method to enable autonomous software agents to perform practical reasoning based upon their subscription to social values. We show how the output from the first of these systems can be used as input to the second and how t...
متن کاملDemocratic Contestation and Citizen Satisfaction in German States
Contestation is a central element of democracy. Party competition disciplines political leaders and fosters more responsive government. Higher levels of two-way party competition are hypothesized to lead to more citizen satisfaction, controlling for ideological position and party loyalty. Data from 69 West German regional election studies over 25 years confirm this hypothesis. OLS regression an...
متن کاملDemocratic Group Signatures with Threshold Traceability
Recently, democratic group signatures(DGSs) particularly catch our attention due to their great flexibilities, i.e., no group manager, anonymity, and individual traceability. In existing DGS schemes, individual traceability says that any member in the group can reveal the actual signer’s identity from a given signature. In this paper, we formally describe the definition of DGS, revisit its secu...
